History of Saint Augustine: In 1947, Fr. Robert Forliti made plans for the construction of a school for the families of St. Augustine Church. Two acres of land were donated to the parish by Mr. and Mrs. Fite. In 1957, Fr. Thomas Tschoepe succeeded as Pastor at St. Augustine. He asked the Sisters of the Holy Spirit to staff the new school. In Sept. 1957, staffed by these Sisters, St. Augustine School opened with three primary grades and was temporarily located in the parish hall. In April 1958, the new school building was dedicated. This building consisted of eight classrooms, a library, science lab and a cafeteria. Because of a need for a 5-year old program, a kindergarten class was formed in the fall of 1973. Classes were held in a temporary building and the current kindergarten building was completed in the fall of 1974. As the community grew, a large increase in school attendance made it necessary to add a new addition to the school. Beginning in August of 1986, grades 5th-8th held classes in the new addition of the Junior High building. This building consisted of a gym, science lab, computer lab, and four classrooms. In the fall of 1989, a Pre-K program was introduced at St. Augustine. In the fall of 1990, the first lay principal took over the leadership of St. Augustine School. September 1997 marked 40 years of dedicated service from the principals and teachers of At. Augustine Catholic School to the children of Pleasant Grove and Mesquite. |
